ultrà st pauli

Upon this time the all important group picture of the tournament. At around 17:00 we where invited to attend the Alerta pre-meeting and we felt great honour in attending. Following that was a short Antira All Star match. Locals are proud of their heritage and do not shy away from their working-class backgrounds. Whilst the quality of football on show at some of the top Bundesliga clubs is a massive draw, one of the main attractions of the German scene right now is the nationwide appreciation of supporters. As such we hastily parked our car and made way through the narrow streets of this town we grew to know and love so much. The Ultra Sankt Pauli were outraged and duly responded by adopting a red version of the Jolly Roger, demonstrating their displeasure. The cultural hegemony in football stadiums has tilted to the left, much of that due to the efforts at FC St. Pauli. They support groups helping refugees legally, medically and socially, and make the stadium premises available for organizing all these activities. :D However football was our forte and we gladly kicked the ball around with comrades on the Millerntor grass and enjoyed beer during our thirst breaks and great company and Antira conversation. Do NOT follow this link or you will be banned from the site. Initiatives include support to the homeless; one organization funds water wells in African countries (“viva con agua”); the handball branch has a partnership with a handball academy in Rwanda; another fan group supports a school library in a remote village in Ghana. This was verified to perfection in 2010-11. Whilst the disputes were an unwelcomed distraction, the resolution did at least highlight the solidarity between fans and organisation. the Party was truly ON!

There is a real sense of unity between club and supporters in Germany and that sentiment echoes around the Millerntor-Stadion louder than any other, which makes St. Pauli’s fans stand out from the crowd. Truly vivid descriptions and the discussion that ensued included ways to counter police brutality and improve co-ordination among the movements.

But wherever there is a demonstration against a right-wing group, different fan groups from FC St. Pauli are usually involved. We entered the USP room to find a beautiful medley of colours and comrade Antifascists from all four corners of Europe. With the talks and workshops concluded it was time for some friendly football with the Lampedusa Refugee team facing the Antira All Star team, a game filled with action and suspense that kept the crowd firmly at the edge of their seats and ended in a well deserved draw!

The historic district is known as the red-light (prostitution) area, where sailors would find a few moments of sexual passion during their short leave. More than 2,000 people come together to contribute to the antifascist movement and show a sign of solidarity against racism and fascism by running around the lake. At almost all home games, the ultras organize a choreography against right-wing or fascist activity. We contributed towards this by raising ideas in the discussion area of communications, which we felt we can assist as an Antira Ultras blog. Inevitably, there have been a number of confrontations with rival supporters throughout the years and the Ultra Sankt Pauli are not afraid to bring their natural fighting spirit to a physical battle. The agenda was laid down for the meeting that would follow early the next day Saturday and involved serious matters of discussion for the actions and continued success of the movement. Tired but ecstatic!

While their banners were placed in the South Stands and their names called out inside the Millerntor the whole crowd lay deep in remembrance with their left fists punching the Hamburg sky! We strolled around the stands for a bit taking in the aura of this magnificent ground only for our senses to be interrupted by the smell of freshly brewed coffee and cakes! The progressive nature of the club was underlined in 2006 as the Millerntor-Stadion played host to the FIFI Wild Cup, just weeks before Germany held the World Cup, which allowed non-FIFA recognised countries to compete for a trophy. The local beers started flowing and a party atmosphere loomed in the air. Left-wing groups have concentrated their work on two pillars: solidarity with the refugees and confronting right-wing groups wherever they show up. We gathered outside the Fanladen and begun the 1 KM walk with Pyro and Smoke throughout the whole march. On the road we stopped at odd corners and narrow streets to “decorate” the city with stickers and colours of both the Inferno and the Rebel Ultras (thankfully we had packed thousands of stickers!). Their stadium was named after Wilhelm Koch, one of the club’s presidents, who had been a member of the Nazi party. St Pauli itself is a port district of Hamburg and is unsurprisingly a very multi-cultural area, with over a quarter of its population being immigrants. This was highly important cause as the years pass and more Nazi Regime and Holocaust survivors leave us, it is becoming increasingly hard for these heroes to travel and make public appearances. However, when it comes to atmosphere and fan culture, it is the secondary club of Germany’s second city that steals all the headlines. It was amazing to see thousands of comrades marching in Antira fashion to a landmark venue of St.Pauli and the Antifa culture! As the last name was called out we all burst in one united cry. It was about time as the daily programme of events would commence at 14:00 with kickoff INSIDE THE MILLERNTOR for the Antira football teams! The organisation is a solid part of a community that is used to battling against financial hardships and they are proud to stand against their richer adversaries. We tried to let it all sink in while we sunk the first drops of Jolly Rouge draught into our stomaches! Once we left the stuff we were back on the scooter again whereby my host had the ingenious idea of taking me on a short tour round the historic St.Pauli district. One is a refugee team FC Lampedusa (named for the Italian island where thousands of refugees landed).

At around 19:00 was a very interesting panel discussion regarding the Role of Football Fans in Social Protest Movements where the brothers and sisters from Turkey shared their experiences in the Taksim Square Protests and the mobilisation all over the country; while giving very vivid accounts of the brutal and murderous interventions of the Turkish police forces. More importantly, FC St. Pauli became the first professional football team in Europe to establish a discipline code for the stadium. The hours passed by like minutes and at some point (i think around 6 am) we managed to make our way to our beds. To try and express with words what we have experienced through our presence at this year’s Antira Tournament in St.Pauli is in itself a very hard task to undertake. Our joy by far overshadowed our hangover and we swiftly made way to a nearby gas station where a car of the old school Inferno lads was waiting to chauffeur us through the six hour drive to Hamburg. However, rather than trivialising their motives, it serves as extra vindication for the club’s beliefs. GERMANY: A PIONEER OF THE BEAUTIFUL GAME and one of the most successful footballing nations on both the club and international stage. We thought we woke up late after the bender of the last night but coming up to the camping ground at around 11 am we realized that mostly everybody else (except the ever hard working Fanladen) where still comfortably dreaming away! Refugees from the Lampedusa in Hamburg group  talked about their situation and experienced solidarity in Hamburg; while other European groups like the White Angels of Zagreb presented their work on refugee policies inside and outside their stadia. This is where the origins of the famous skull and crossbows emblem are located.

:D The pit stops where ever present and the closer we got to our destination the more the excitement grew! Being a member of FC St. Pauli equates with being antiracist, antifascist, anti-sexist and anti-homophobic — the Millerntor Stadium is the only stadium of a professional football team in Europe with a rainbow flag waving in the wind above the stadium — as well as also being against the ongoing commercialization of soccer.

There is a serious struggle going on in European stadiums — along the lines of Antonio Gramsci’s discussion of the fight for cultural hegemony — between right-wing hooligans and left-wing ultras (ultra-fanatical fans). The team were relegated, but supporters were happy to see that the club’s integrity had been preserved. We got rid of the pre-flight stress with a few beers and shots at the airport bar and then boarded our long flight to Brussels. On the pitch, the club has largely remained in the shadow of Hamburger SV, whilst their chances of ever challenging the superpowers of Bayern or Dortmund are virtually non-existent.

Strangers amongst strangers, living kilometres apart, but ever so close in our beliefs, our attitudes and our mentality. on the historic Millerntor pitch. When the yellow press tried to get all the professional football teams to symbolically wear a yellow ribbon to indicate their “support” for refugees, FC St. Pauli did not join in but on the contrary criticized the yellow press for hypocrisy. This code has now become the blueprint for many other professional football teams in Germany. and took the time to walk around the stands and take some pictures! He drew in all his squatter friends as well as supporters from the left.
